The Northumbrian National Party (NNP)
The Northumbrian National Party was founded in 1999, as a direct consequence of the complete failure on the part of the existing political parties in Northumberland to represent the interests of Northumberland against the expensionist centralism of the London government. The main objective of the NNP is, therefore, the preservation of the County of Northumberland with political autonomy within England. The NNP is of the opinion, that the County of Northumberland is entitled to it on the grounds that, having been in continous existence for more than 2000 years, it is one of the oldest communities in the United Kingdom and Europe, with a population of over 300,000 people. It covers an area of 5,000 sq.kms or more than than some countries represented in the United Nations; in the course of its history, Northumberland, an old anglo-saxon Kingdom of Celtic and Roman heritage, has produced many achievements in the field of culture and the fine arts, which have been recognized in Great Britain and the whole world. The NNP disputes the legality of Westminster´s Laws, and the type of government which exists in England and the centralism of London. The NNP does not want a centralist British state, but a genuine federation of autonomy counties and regions within the United Kingdom. The NNP demands a gradual dismantling of the centralism in London and a strengthening of English regions and counties. The NNP acknowledges federalism as the future political, economic, cultural and social structure; it has, therefore, always advocated a strictly federal internal policy for Northumberland. The Party also fights for a maximum influence on the part of the people and the communities politics and advocates referenda for all important political issues. Collectively, the NNP stands for an upward structure, a vertical structure of public affairs, starting at the grass-roots and for direct democracy.
